Tour Guide
About the Role
Greyfriars Kirk is open to the public for over seven months of the year and over 55,000 visitors are welcomed inside the Kirk during this period. The Kirkyard (owned by the Council is open throughout the year). During the course of the year the Kirk receives bookings for groups requesting specific tours related to the Kirk, Kirkyard or both. Tours are often themed such as Enlightenment, Astronomers, Literary, Medicine, Bobby and JK Rowling-related. You would have to be confident to talk to up to 15 people, learn a script and be able to answer lots of questions!
Tasks Involved
You would be leading a group of people through the Kirk and/or the Kirkyard. Group sizes can be from 2 to 15 people.
The Kirk will be charging for the tours so you do have to be knowledgeable about your subject matter and we will provide the information on that.
Tours need to start and finish on time in order to fit customer requirements.
When and Where
You would join a team of volunteers whom the Kirk office can call upon to lead tours. Initially you would shadow an experienced guide, however eventually and once confident, you would look after your own groups. Tours do not take more than an hour usually although this can vary depending on the request. All tours will take place at the Kirk and Kirkyard – usually within weekday working hours although occasionally weekend requests are received.
Time Commitment
As mentioned above, most tours are about 40-60 minutes. You might be required on duty once a fortnight or more regularly as we gain a reputation for hosting interesting tours that people enjoy and we received positive feedback on our social media sites such as Facebook and our website.
